CHAMPIONS LEAGUE Czech teams fared rather badly in Champions League qualifying. Following a 2-1 defeat on their home pitch, Sparta Praha also lost 1-0 to Panathinaikos Athens in the return leg in Greece Aug. 26. Meanwhile, Slavia Praha failed to overcome a 2-0 aggregate against Fiorentina, managing only to draw 0-0 with the Italians Aug. 27 in Prague.UEFA Three Czech soccer teams will still compete in the UEFA Cup’s first round in September. Sparta Praha will take on Croatia’s Dinamo Zagreb while Slavia Praha is set to play against Romania’s Vaslui. Baník Ostrava will challenge the powerful Spartak Moscow squad. Cup first round games will take place Sept. 18 and Oct. 2.SUPER CUP National team midfielder Radek Šírl became only the fifth Czech player to win in the UEFA Super Cup, a competition pitting the Champions League winner against the UEFA Cup winner. Šírl’s team, Zenit St. Petersburg, upset England’s Manchester United 2-1 Aug. 29 in Monaco. Šírl played the entire game.BEST Chelsea’s Petr Čech has been named by European soccer’s governing body as the best goalkeeper in the Champions League’s most recent edition. Čech helped Chelsea to the final, losing to Manchester United in a penalty shootout. Čech conceded only six goals over nine games. He earned similar honors in 2005 and 2007.MOTORSPORTS Czech motorcycle stars Lukáš Pešek and Karel Abrahám gave their strongest performances this year in the San Marino Grand Prix in Misano Aug. 31. As part of the MotoGP tour, Pešek finished ninth in the 250cc race. Abrahám came in just one place behind him. Spain’s Alvaro Bautista won the 250cc competition. After 12 races, Abrahám and Pešek rank 15 and 16, respectively, in rider points.DOPING Czech cyclist Ondřej Sosenka tested positive for methamphetamines at the national championships in June, his team, PSK Whirlpool-Author, announced Aug. 29. Consequently, the 32-year-old Sosenka was suspended from team competition. In 2005, Sosenka set a world record for distance covered in one hour: 49.7 kilometers at the Krylatskoye track in Moscow.AUCTION The 1992 Olympic champion decathlete Robert Změlík auctioned off the jersey worn by javelin thrower Barbora Špotáková during her dramatic gold medal performance at the recent Beijing Olympics. Změlík paid 330,000 Kč ($19,808) for the jersey. Money received through the auction was donated to Prague’s Motol hospital.PARALYMPICS Fifty-six Czech athletes will compete in the upcoming Paralympics, scheduled to take place in Beijing Sept. 6–17. They are part of a field of 4,000 athletes from 147 countries taking part in the games.
