Beware of the bearGreat article, Darius (“Whose backyard?” Opinion, Aug. 27–Sept. 2)! Need more of these in the United States. Nothing surprises me about Gerhard Schröder. Politicians spend a good part of their political life preparing for their after-political life. Some are just a little smarter and less obvious. Nice research on your part.More to your point of the article, Russia will go back to what Russia has always done. They do what they want, usually to extremes and no one (NATO, UN, EU) ever stands up to them. Only little countries (with some of the most beautiful people and cultures) that are next in line to be invaded are on the frontline literally and metaphorically. So why are we surprised at this as if it is the first time Russia is the school bully? Time to find alternative energy quickly and pop Russia’s economic balloon.Dominick KasmauskasRotterdam, New YorkListen to HavelIt’s great once again to hear the words of the WISE President Havel (“NATO looks east,” Opinion, Aug. 20–27). His wisdom is as precise as it is complex (in the difficult changes of today’s world). He has never taken the simple path and his rich guidance is not bending to Russian intimidation, though critics of the missile radar base appear to be. Thank you Václav, we miss you!Tom McCallinDenver, ColoradoQuestions, not answersPetr Švácha claims to be a leading entomologist and you claim that he is one of the world’s foremost experts (“Czech entomologists arrested in India,” News, July 2–9). Quick research into scientific journals shows that for an “expert” he has no published research that can bolster this claim. Most of the references (where his name appears) are to his collections. Švácha’s “co-researcher,” Emil Kučera, is a forester! This reinforces the suspicion that both are traders in rare insects and not really scientists. In fact, if they are world-famous scientists, where is the reference (their university positions, research, awards, etc.)?Werner MeisnerCologne, GermanyWhat about Iraq?[In regard to] Russia’s show of brutal and overwhelming military muscle in Georgia (“Whose backyard?” Opinion, Aug. 27–Sept. 2), where were these comments when the United States invaded a much weaker country (Iraq) with brutal and overwhelming military muscle? Where were these comments when USA and Europe created Kosovo forcefully despite Russian objections?Gurmit SinghIndia
