SOCCER The Czech national soccer team drew with England, 2-2, Aug. 20 at Wembley Stadium in London. The Czechs took the lead twice, but England leveled the score in the last minute of the first half and then repeated the stunt just before full time. It was the national team’s first contest under new head coach Petr Rada, who took over from Karel Brückner after Euro 2008.

BRÜCKNER Meanwhile, Karel Brückner recorded a surprisingly successful result in his debut as head coach in Austria. His new team held powerhouse Italy to a 2-2 draw in a friendly match held in Vienna Aug. 20. Brückner guides the Austrian team with assistant coaches Andreas Herzog, an Austria native, and Slovak Ján Kocian.
COURT The Czech Supreme Court will deal with an appeal filed by nine soccer officials and referees against sanctions levied by lower level courts in response to charges they fixed Gambrinus liga games during the 2003–04 season. Police caught the accused via wire-tap negotiating the outcomes of future games. They were punished with fines and suspended imprisonment sentences. Still, nine of the 10 officials insist the recordings did not clearly prove corruption.
MOTORSPORTS The Škoda Auto team unveiled its new rally car. The new Fabia S2000, designed to compete in World Rally Championship events, was introduced during the annual Barum race in Zlín Aug. 22. Team managers expect the car to be ready for competition by Rally Monte Carlo in January 2009.
JÁGR Jaromír Jágr received the Golden Stick award as the country’s best hockey player for 2007–08. A poll of Czech hockey experts and journalists placed Jágr ahead of forward Tomáš Plekanec of Montreal and Toronto defenseman Tomáš Kaberle. Jágr played with the New York Rangers last season. In June, he transferred to Russia’s Avantgard Omsk. The highest-ranked star playing in the country was Slavia Praha forward Jaroslav Bednář, who took 10th place.
TENNIS Young Czech tennis star Lucie Šafářová won in her fourth event on the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) Tour, beating China’s Peng Shuai at the Forest Hills Tennis Classic, a final tune-up for the U.S. Open. The unseeded Šafářová upended fellow Czech and third-seed Iveta Benešová in the semifinal, then breezed past Peng 6-4, 6-2 to claim the $22,000 first prize. Šafářová, 21, last won at Gold Coast, Australia, in 2006.
FRISBEE The World Flying Disc Federation selected Prague to host their Ultimate Club Championship in 2010. The Ultimate Frisbee tournament will gather 100 teams from 30 countries, with activities taking place in and around Strahov. Organizers set the games for July 3–10, 2010.
BASKETBALL Lithuania crushed the Czech Republic 75-33 to win the European U-16 basketball title. Led by Jan Švejda and Jaromir Boháček, the young Czech squad surprised powerhouse teams from Spain and Turkey to reach the finals. But the quick Lithuanian backcourt, including guard Vytenis Čižauskas, proved too much for the Czechs.
