ELECTIONS There are very few women among the candidates for regional and state elections this fall, Mladá fronta Dnes reported Aug. 25. None of the Civic Democratic Party’s 27 Senate constituencies in which voters will be choosing their next senator includes a woman. The Christian Democrats have found one woman candidate. The Social Democrats have five.

BUGS Two Czech entomologists on trial in India for the illegal collection of rare insects have claimed that their confessions are fake, the online news server Aktuálně.cz reported Aug 25. According to their lawyer, they had to sign blank papers that were later made to look like confessions. The scientists were detained in June.
AGENT Social Democratic MP Pavel Ploc decided to sue the Institute for the Study of Totalitarian Regimes, the Czech News Agency (ČTK) reported Aug 25. The institute published a register of possible communist military counterintelligence operatives. Initially Ploc wanted to publish his file online to prove that he has nothing to hide.
MARRIAGE Foreign Affairs Minister Karel Schwarzenberg married his ex-wife in a secret ceremony in Austria, the online news server Aktuálně.cz reported Aug. 25. The couple had been separated for 20 years. While the ministry did not comment on the event, Schwarzenberg’s son confirmed that his parents had renewed their vows.
DEATHS After a two-day search, Croatian authorities recovered the bodies of two Czech divers in the sea near the small town of Podgora, ČTK reported Aug. 24. The search had included professional divers, boats and a helicopter. Eleven Czechs died in Croatia between Jan. 1 and Aug. 1, 2008, according to the Foreign Affairs Ministry.
