Pedophiles to escape prosecution

New law does not apply to Czechs who viewed child pornography in 2006

August 27th, 2008 issue

(Updated August 28, 2008) Thousands of Czechs who downloaded child pornography from the Internet will escape prosecution, because the possession of child-pornography was not illegal in 2006, when the crime took place, Hospodářské noviny wrote on Wednesday.

The law that would have sent the users of the child-porn site, registered in Constance, Germany, to jail came into effect in 2008. The new law states that those in possession of photos, film, computer or electronic material depicting the abuse of children shall go to jail for two years.

Czech police found out about the pedophiles from their German counterparts two years ago. Polish, Turkish, Hungarian and Austrian viewers are also under investigation.
