GEORGIA A U.S. ship arrived in the Georgian port of Batumi carrying the first delivery of aid supplies by sea, the BBC reported Aug 24. Russian forces are still in control of the military port of Poti, to the north of Batumi, after Moscow withdrew most of its combat troops from the country. Meanwhile, a train full of fuel exploded near Gori. According to Georgian officials, the explosion was caused by a landmine.UK A private consulting company working for Britain’s Home Office has lost a memory stick containing details on all of the 84,000 prisoners serving time in England and Wales, The New York Times reported Aug 22. The breach follows one last fall in which two computer disks related to the child benefits program and containing personal details of more than a third of the population went astray in the mail.IRELAND The Irish Republic may need to hold a second referendum on the EU’s Lisbon Treaty despite its rejection by voters in June, according to Irish Europe Minister Dick Roche, the BBC reported Aug 25. Roche said that the government is currently trying to identify the most sensitive issues that will have to be dealt with prior to a second referendum.FRANCE Eight climbers were missing and presumed dead Aug. 25 after an avalanche swamped a commonly used hiking trail near Mont Blanc, Western Europe’s highest peak. Authorities said ground searches were suspended Sunday due to unstable conditions, Reuters reported. The avalanche, triggered when a chunk of ice as wide as two football fields broke off a mountain face, appears to be the worst in the French Alps in more than a decade, officials said. SPAIN Government officials say some of the victims of last week’s plane crash in Madrid may never be identified, the BBC reported Aug. 25. Only 86 of the 154 people killed in the disaster have been identified, many by DNA analysis. Interior Minister Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba said the process was taking longer than expected, but added the country wanted to ensure that the bodies were properly identified before being released for burial. ITALY Police say a gang of men brutally beat a vacationing Dutch couple and raped the woman while they camped outside Rome during a cycling tour, the Associated Press reported Aug. 23. The Carabinieri paramilitary police say three or four men struck when the couple, both in their 50s, was asleep in a tent at Ponte Galeria. The victims are being treated for shock and multiple fractures at San Camillo hospital.PORTUGAL A train carrying about 50 people derailed near the village of Brunheda, leaving one person dead and some 25 others injured, the BBC reported Aug. 22. Rescuers had to cut those trapped in the wreckage free from the train, which was hurled onto its side. The train came off the tracks in the Carrazeda de Ansiaes region, a popular tourist area.GERMANY A son of Nazi doctor Aribert Heim wants his father declared legally dead so he can claim his money and document the suffering that occurred at a former concentration camp, the Associated Press reported Aug. 24. Rüdiger Heim said his father, dubbed “Dr. Death” and considered one of the worst war criminals, should officially be declared missing and then dead. Heim’s children have been unable to claim investments worth $1.78 million. UK Former Prime Minister Margaret “Iron Lady” Thatcher is suffering from dementia, the BBC reported Aug 24. The news was revealed in a new book by her daughter that is being serialized by The Mail on Sunday. Baroness Thatcher retreated from public life after a series of strokes in 2002.
