CORRUPTION The anti-corruption police have opened a file investigating the privatization of Prague’s Ruyzně Airport, Czech Airlines and ČD Cargo, weekly Respekt reported Aug. 26. Citing unnamed sources, the weekly suggested that Transportation Minister Aleš Řebíček, Prague Mayor Pavel Bém and businessman Roman Janoušek were involved in the deals, and warned of a possible Russian connection.

STRIKE The situation is ripe for another strike, Milan Štěch, chairman of the ČMKOS umbrella labor confederation told daily Hospodářské noviny (HN) Aug. 26. The most radical unions represent state workers, whose real wages are declining this year due to inflation, which exceeds their latest wage increase.
CONSTRUCTION Local engineering investment group CZMT signed a 17 billion-Kč contract with Middle East Development Aug. 25 to supply a cement plant, steelworks and a power plant as part of a large-scale project connecting Djibouti and Yemen. CZMT won the developer’s trust due to an earlier cement plant project in Yemen, HN reported.
INSURANCE Generali PPF Holding is expanding to the Belarusian insurance market, HN reported Aug. 22. The company, a fusion of richest Czech Petr Kellner’s PPF Group with Italian insurer Generali, will thus operate on the insurance markets of 13 countries. Operations in Belarus are expected to begin by the end of this year.
TESCO British retail chain Tesco will choose a partner Sept. 5 to enable the launch of financial services in its local stores, HN reported Aug. 22. Consumer loans companies GE Money, Home Credit and Cetelem are among the six bidders for the project, which will begin with store credit cards.
PUBLISHER The Syndicate of Journalists issued a statement Aug. 21 warning the German owner of the Economia not to sell the publishing house to Mladá fronta publisher, whose opaque ownership is allegedly linked to Russian capital. While its representatives continue to deny interest in the purchase, Mladá fronta (nothing in common with the daily) is reportedly the highest bidder in the imminent sale, daily Mladá fronta Dnes (MfD) reported.
SIEMENS Workers at the Siemens Kolejová vozidla plant in Prague went on strike for two hours Aug. 20 to protest the plant’s planned shutdown, HN reported. In addition to the KOVO Metalworkers’ Federation, the workers were joined by Siemens employees from Germany and Slovakia, Škoda Auto, and German labor union IGM. KOVO questioned Siemens’ severance pay policy, while IGM called for job retention at the Prague plant.
CARDS A number of small retailers have stopped accepting payment cards due to the rising fees charged by card companies for payment terminals, MfD reported Aug. 21. The SOCR commerce and tourism confederation plans to address the situation by buying its own terminals.
