FINED The Slovak Anti-Monopoly Office fined the country’s telecom operator Slovak Telekom 885 million Sk ($43 million/712.4 million Kč) Aug. 20 for refusing its competitors local calling access, the Czech News Agency (ČTK) reported. The company intends to appeal the fine, which represents about 15 percent of its 2007 net profits and is the largest fine imposed by the Anti-Monopoly Office, according to Reuters. MOBILE TV The Association of Mobile Network Operators plans to acquire a telecom tender for the operation of a DVB-H digital multimedia network for mobile phones, daily E15 reported Aug. 19. The association, comprising T-Mobile, Vodafone and Telefónica O2, is taking steps toward founding a joint subsidiary to operate the shared network, and may approach České Radiokomunikace for technical support.ELECTRICITY In an effort to lower energy usage in the region, south Bohemian civic group Energy Centre České Budějovice has introduced a virtual calculator to track energy usage for households and alerting customers to possible cutbacks, ČTK reported Aug. 21. The free calculator, available on the group’s Web site, requires users to record the input and usage time of individual electric appliances.JAJAH After launching operations in the Czech Republic in June, California-based Internet telephony company Jajah subsequently announced expansion to Slovakia, Hungary and Poland. The company’s Direct service allows customers to make low-cost calls through a local phone number via PC-free VoIP calling.
