OLYMPICS Czechs won gold medals in the first two days of the Beijing Olympics, but it took a few days for the team to pick up more precious metal. Return legs are scheduled to take place Aug. 26 (Slavia) and Aug. 27 (Sparta).
UEFA Like Slavia and Sparta, Slovan Liberec stumbled in its UEFA Cup qualifying match against Slovakia’s Žilina. The north Bohemian team lost the home leg 2-1 Aug. 14 and must win by at least two goals in Slovakia Aug. 28 in order to advance in Europe’s second-tier tourney.
TRANSFER Former Czech national soccer team captain Tomáš Galásek completed his move from Germany’s Nuremberg to Baník Ostrava. Galásek, 35, signed a one-year contract Aug. 14 returning to Baník after 12 years playing abroad, mostly in the Netherlands. Galásek virtually defected from Baník to Tilburg in 1996 after the north Moravian club refused to release him. Later, he joined Ajax before moving to Germany.
BIG MAN
Former University of Illinois center Shaun Pruitt signed to play the 2008–09 basketball season with Prostějov. The big man — 6’10”, 240 pounds — averaged 12.6 points and 7.3 rebounds per game in his senior year. He worked out with the New Orleans Hornets during the NBA’s Las Vegas summer league before agreeing to terms with Prostějov. The Mattoni league season tips off Oct. 14.
LIGHTNING The NHL’s Tampa Bay Lightning agreed to play a warm-up match against Slovakia’s Slovan Bratislava Sept. 30 in Bratislava. The game will serve as preparation for the Lightning’s NHL season opening series against the New York Rangers, scheduled Oct. 4 and Oct. 5 in Prague.
