TRAIN Authorities expect the Aug. 8 Olomouc train accident that killed seven people and injured 70 to cost 136 million Kč ($8.8 million) in damages, Mladá fronta Dnes reported Aug. 12. Officials expect more to be paid to injured passengers and the bereaved. No one has been charged with the accident yet, but initial police reports suggest the blame lies with the company restoring a bridge that collapsed.    

DNA Local scientists discovered the structure of an enzyme that can change the DNA of bacteria, the Czech News Agency (ČTK) reported Aug. 11. This new revolutionary method will allow doctors to change resistant strains of bacteria back to normal and cure more patients. The scientists hope to publish their discovery within the next month.
LIBRARY The European Commission has ruled that Prague’s architectural tender for a national library building was illegal, ČTK reported Aug 7. Experts think this will be the final blow for the building. Prague Mayor Pavel Bém accused National Library Director Vlastimil Ježek of being responsible for the fiasco and has called for him to step out of the Senate race this fall.
ARREST Police have caught a 48-year-old Kosovo man who hid 3.6 kilograms of heroin in a forest near Skorkov, central Bohemia, ČTK reported Aug. 8. The materials were sufficient for the production of 92,000 doses with a street value of about 4.6 million Kč. The man faces illegal drug production and possession charges, for which he may be sentenced up to 10 years in prison.
THEFT Police have detained a 10-member group for stealing at least 71 cars worth more than more than 9.9 million Kč, ČTK reported Aug. 9. Police said the gang was headed by a Slovak man who was wanted nationally. All hold prior criminal records, and one is a former Prague police officer. If convicted, the men may be sentenced to a maximum of 12 years in prison.
