More memoriesIn 1968, during the Soviet occupation, I was temporarily stationed as a soldier at the Sportovní rota in Prague–Stromovka (“Witness to History,” Tempo Aug. 6–12). We were the only Army compound not taken over by Soviet troops. Me and the rest of the soldiers in the sports complex eagerly watched Russian troops driving around in tanks, searching for enemies. Our commanders gave orders to lock guns and ammunition in the compound basement and change into civilian clothes. At least twice I snuck outside the Stromovka compound and took a tram to Wenceslas Square. I remember speaking to some of the soldiers sitting on a tank, asking them in Russian, why they came to Prague with arms? They told me they came to liberate Prague from Western oppression. Unfortunately I had no camera or recording device to document any of it. I would like to see more photographs of the Soviet occupation published in The Prague Post. I appreciate the work of the photographers and curators collecting and publishing these works.Stanislav JanousekOceanside, New YorkOlympic peaceIt’s simple, the Chinese have a problem with civil rights (“Censored!,” Opinion Aug. 6–12), but the Olympics are not meant to be a cure for all evils. The Olympics are about peace at the games. They are not the United Nations. The Chinese, the Tibetans, the West and the IOC fail to understand this. So let us import peace at the games. The Olympics are not a tool to solve world problems. Makis HavadjiasRiverside, CaliforniaResponsible radarI live close to the radar in Sokolnice (“ ‘Other’ radar begins trial operation,” News, May 28–June 3), see it every day, and know what? Nobody here pays attention to it as a threat. The radar is taken like every other “firm;” it just looks more majestic. So stop with the intimidation and face reality. If we are in NATO and want to be taken seriously by the world, we have to be responsible in what we are standing for.Kamila ZupkováSokolnice–Otnice, south MoraviaVery interesting article (“Activists defend road against highway,” News Aug. 6–12), considering the history of the road lobby bullying the railways into closure then awarding a fat contract to convert a track-bed into a road. Many a closed rail line has been converted into a road. The alternative approach has been to spend lavish sums of money to upgrade a line then say it’s not economical in justifying closure. I am pleased to hear that a protest group is active in the struggle to have the dismantled railway re-installed and will watch developments closely over the next few months. So much for reducing the so-called ‘carbon-footprint’!Alistair KewishLondon
