DENMARK Two alleged Islamic militants have gone on trial in Copenhagen on charges of planning bomb attacks, the Associated Press reported Aug. 11. Prosecutors claim the two men conducted a test blast with the same explosive that was used by suicide bombers in London in 2005. The 22-year-old men, who were not named, were arrested during an anti-terror sweep in September.ITALY Five North Africans have been arrested in Italy on charges of conspiring to commit acts of international terrorism, the BBC reported Aug 9. The alleged international terrorist ring is said to have recruited suicide bombers for Iraq and Afghanistan. According to officials, the police are still looking for one member.UK Police are continuing investigations following the discovery of the bodies of two Chinese students in a flat in Newcastle, England, the Associated Press reported Aug. 11. Police said the victims died from severe head injuries, but are unable to determine the murder weapon. The bodies were found Aug. 9, and police deployed extra officers in the vicinity to reassure local residents.EU The European Union has approved new sanctions against Iran in protest of its nuclear program, the BBC reported Aug 8. The measures target loans to companies trading with Iran and allow for tougher cargo inspections. The EU sanctions come after three UN resolutions imposing curbs on Iran after it defied successive Security Council ultimatums to freeze uranium enrichment.FRANCE President Nicolas Sarkozy, who attended the opening ceremonies of the Beijing Olympics despite domestic criticism, announced that he would not meet the Dalai Lama later this month in France, the International Herald Tribune (IHT) reported Aug 8. Instead, his wife will meet the Dalai Lama and open a Buddhist temple Aug 22.UKRAINE Ukraine warned Russia Aug. 10 it could bar Russian Navy ships from returning to their base in the Crimea because of their deployment to Georgia’s coast, the Associated Press reported. Both Ukraine and Georgia have sought to free themselves of Russia’s influence, integrate into the West and join NATO. The statement reflected strong Ukrainian support for Georgia. SWITZERLAND Swiss police say an American man and woman have been found dead on the eastern flank of the Matterhorn, the Associated Press reported Aug. 9. Swiss police said the bodies of a 53-year-old man and 57-year-old woman were recovered at an altitude of 13,100 feet. They were without a guide, but it is unclear if they were climbing or hiking. Names were not immediately released.GERMANY Marburg town council decided to make solar-heating panels compulsory, IHT reported Aug 7. Anyone who fails to comply faces a fine. Opponents have criticized the move as unconstitutional and have asked the regional government to repeal it. Supporters are hoping that the state government will back them. A lengthy court battle looks likely.SLOVAKIA The Slovak government has released a new CD with Roma songs about the euro, the Czech News Agency reported Aug 6. The Roma, or Gypsy, population has called for more popular campaigns explaining the function of the European common currency. Already a theater is touring the countryside with plays about the euro.UK Former Manchester United footballer Ben Collett was awarded £4.3 million in damages at the High Court in London Aug. 11 over an injury that ended his career, the Associated Press reported. Collett, who received the Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year award during his time at United, never fully recovered from breaking his leg in two places following a tackle during his first reserve match in 2003.
