CONTROVERSY A group of Sparta Praha fans unfurled banners expressing support for accused Bosnian Serb war commander Radovan Karadžić and former General Ratko Mladić during the team’s Gambrinus liga opener against Mladá Boleslav Aug. 2. The banners also threatened the European Union with “death.” Sparta has been fined several times in the past due to its fans’ behavior. Game organizers did not respond to the provocations. SPARTA Sparta Praha entered the week on the verge of advancing to the final round of the Champions League, after returning from Moldova with a 1-0 win over Sheriff Tiraspol July 30. Defender Jiří Kladrubský scored the only goal in the 74th minute. Sparta and Sheriff are scheduled to play their return leg game in Prague Aug. 6.DRAW Gambrinus liga champion Slavia Praha drew Italy’s Fiorentina to kick off their Champions League run. Slavia travels to Italy Aug. 12 before hosting Fiorentina in Prague Aug. 26. SPEEDWAY Defending speedway world champion Nicki Pedersen of Denmark triumphed in the Czech Grand Prix, held at the Markéta circuit in Břevnov, Prague Aug. 2. Pedersen outpaced countryman Hans Andersen.FLOORBALL In the finals of the annual Czech Open, national floorball champion Tatran Střešovice almost pulled off a surprising upset, dropping the tournament’s title game 1-0 to Sweden’s Sirius IBK Aug. 3. Teams from all over Europe took part in the event.WHITFIELD Point guard Maurice Whitfield, a dual Czech-American citizen, will miss the Czech national basketball squad’s appearance in the European championship qualifiers in Bosnia next month. Whitfield withdrew from the team’s training camp for personal reasons.RETURN Another NHL veteran abandoned the big time to finish out his career in the Czech Extraliga. Defenseman Jaroslav Modrý, 37, who spent 16 years with the Los Angeles Kings and Philadelphia Flyers, will skate for HC Liberec during the 2008-2009 season.COACHES Newly appointed Czech national soccer team head coach Petr Rada, who took over from Karel Brückner in a surprise decision, named his assistant coaching staff. Most notable among the group are former Brückner assistant Jaroslav Šilhavý and Pavel Hapal, who starred on the national team.
