BRÜCKNER The recently retired head coach of the Czech national soccer team, Karel Brückner, was named the new head coach for Austria’s national team. The 68-year-old stepped down as the Czech team’s coach after Euro 2008 tournament in June. Brückner’s shocking announcement came July 28, when he signed a one-year contract reportedly worth 25 million Kč. He became the third Czech to guide a foreign national soccer team, after Milan Máčala (Bahrain) and Dušan Fitzel (Malta).

CYCLIST Cyclist Roman Kreuziger finished 13th overall in the Tour de France stage race. The 22-year-old member of the Liquigas team not only notched the best tour result of any Czech, but also did so in his debut. Before, Tomáš Konečný and Pavel Padrnos ranked 65th in the overall standings. The tour wrapped up with a swing through Paris July 27.
CRASH Former Czech national hockey team forward Ladislav Lubina caused a four-car pileup in east Bohemia July 24 that ended in one fatality. Lubina reportedly raced into oncoming traffic while passing a truck. The operator of the truck smashed into the vehicle directly in front driven by the father of former national soccer team player Vratislav Lokvenc, who died instantly. Lubina faces imprisonment of up to five years.
SOCCER Germany defeated the Italians 3-1 in the European U-19 Championship final, played at Jablonec nad Nisou July 26. In semifinal action, the Czech Republic battled the eventual champs well into extra time, falling to Germany 2-1 after an exhausting 119-minute marathon.
GAMBRINUS The Pilsner Urquell brewery extended its sponsorship contract with the country’s top soccer league. The July 28 agreement ensures the league will bear the Gambrinus brand name for another six seasons. While financial details of the contract were not released, rumors have it that Pilsner Urquell may pay out some 500 million Kč over the term.
CRICKET The Czech cricket team captured a surprising second place in the Twenty20 challenge held in Wales, narrowly falling to Estonia. Mik Starý, Josef Jindra and Lukáš Fencl starred during the competition, along with team captain Craig Hampson. The Czech Republic joined the International Cricket Council (the international governing body) only eight years ago.
TRANSFER Thirty-seven-year-old NHL veteran Martin Ručinský will join Sparta Praha in Extraliga hockey next season. Ručinský has played in the NHL since 1991 and skated through 961 games, scoring 241 goals and racking up 371 assists. Last season, he played with the St. Louis Blues but rarely made it onto the team’s starting lineup. Ručinský joins a growing list of players returning to the Extraliga.
