BEER The $52 million (777 million Kč) July 14 takeover of American brewer Anheuser-Busch by the Belgium-based InBev could significantly reduce the price of the Czech Republic’s Budweiser/Budvar brewery, should the government decide to sell it, the BBC reported. Anheuser-Busch was the most likely bidder for Budvar, but the new company will not be interested since InBev already has a number of brands in Europe.OIL Czech filling stations should be unaffected by a Russian oil shortfall caused by a July 11 announcement by Russia that supplies will continue to dwindle through July, Unipetrol announced July 14. Less than 300,000 tons will be delivered out of the 500,000 tons contractually agreed. The shortfall was a result of technical and organizational problems in Russia, and the lower supplies are being offset by state reserves.STEEL Mittal steel producer is withdrawing lawsuits against the Czech Republic that demanded 26 billion Kč after a settlement was reached, Finance Ministry announced July 11. The country has agreed to sell its 11 percent share of ArcelorMittal Ostrava to ArcelorMittal, thereby gaining 6.8 billion Kč for the shares. If approved by the government, ArcelorMittal will hold more than 71 percent of ArcelorMittal Ostrava, the largest Czech steel producer.EXCISE TAX The Finance Ministry will consider changing the rules on stockpiling less-expensive cigarettes once the excise tax is increased after several larger cigarette companies raised concerns, the daily Mladá fronta Dnes reported July 14. Philip Morris ČR, along with other companies, requested a deadline for retailers to sell their stock of lower-tax products. TENDER The government announced the largest IT tender in its history July 15, the daily Hospodářské noviny (HN) reported. The tender, worth 2.5 billion Kč, is to build a digital information system, the State Treasury, to manage public finances. This is the second attempt to announce a tender for the project, after the initial one was canceled by the Anti-Monopoly Office. RULING Prague Municipal Court complied July 14 with entrepreneur Václav Fischer’s complaint, ruling that that the travel agency Fischer can no longer use his name, HN reported. The company, which Fischer sold five years ago, plans to appeal the verdict.HYUNDAI Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Czech violated the law by launching the construction of a manufacturing hall for its fully owned daughter-company HYSCO without a necessary builder’s permit, the Czech News Agency (ČTK) reported July 14. The company is liable to pay a fine of up to a million crowns. SALES Škoda Auto raised its H1 sales 17.9 percent to 366,686 cars, the carmaker announced July 15. The growth was the biggest in Central and Eastern Europe, where sales rose 40.1 percent year on year. Škoda now has a 2.27 share of the West European car market with a 2.1 percent growth, according to ČTK.
