(Updated July 16, 2008) Martin Bursík, chairman of the Green Party, threatened to leave the government if the Cabinet does not keep its promise to prohibit trucks from driving on public roads on Fridays and Sunday afternoons, Novinky.cz reported Wednesday.
Bursík made the announcement after he found out that Prime Minister Mirek Topolánek put off the decision after meeting with the Truckdrivers' Association.
"A crushing majority of citizens said they are fed up with the trucks," Bursík said, pointing out that statistics show 48 percent of fatal injuries happen between Friday and Sunday, and the thickest traffic is Fridays around 4 p.m. and Sundays around 6 p.m.
A Novinky.cz survey showed that 80 percent of Czechs support the move to keep trucks off the roads Fridays.
The Cabinet was supposed to vote on the regulation July 23. However, after meeting with representatives of the Truckdrivers Association, Topolánek announced that the Transportation Ministry would first write an analysis of the effects of such a move and that the government would discuss the issue again in August.
"Truck transportation will be limited, or the prime minister will have to deal with another coalition partner than the Green Party. This isn't a threat, it's just a return to the terms of the government's stated program," Bursík said.
