FIGHT Two national soccer team players, midfielder Radek Kováč and striker Martin Fenin, were involved in a pub brawl in Prague’s center June 24. Fenin said the brawl started after an unidentified person attacked Kováč. He said that none of the players suffered any injuries.COACH The Czech Football Association postponed a June 24 vote on the national team’s new head coach until July 17. Rumors in soccer circles have it that, following Slavia Praha’s refusal to release Karel Jarolím to guide the national team, Sparta Praha President Jozef Chovanec appears to be the hottest candidate. Chovanec led the national team in the past, stepping down after the team’s failure to qualify for the 2002 World Cup. The other candidates to take over the team are Germany’s Klaus Toppmöller and FK Teplice’s Petr Rada.SCANDAL While searching for candidates to guide the national team, the Czech Football Association’s chairman, Pavel Mokrý, announced that former FC Liverpool coach Gerard Houllier, who now works as the French Football Association’s technical director, expressed interest in taking over the team. Houllier strictly denied the report. Mokrý later admitted that he fell victim to a fake e-mail.GOLFER Fifteen-year-old amateur golf player Jessica Kordová — daughter of the 1998 Australian Open tennis champion Petr Korda, who now works as her caddy — made a stunning debut at the U.S. Open golf tournament in Edina, Minnesota. In her first major senior tournament, Kordová finished in a tie for 19th place, beating the world’s No. 1 and 2 players, Mexico’s Lorena Ochoa and Sweden’s Annika Sorenstam, respectively.TENNIS Tennis player Nicole Vaidišová remained the only Czech to get past the fourth round at Wimbledon in singles play. In her best tournament run this year, Vaidišová beat Russia’s Anna Chakvetadze 4-6, 7-6, 6-3 June 30, qualifying for the quarterfinals, where she will challenge China’s Jie Zheng.SCORER Soccer striker Václav Svěrkoš, the Gambrinus liga’s top scorer this season, may move from Baník Ostrava to Russia’s Saturn. Baník’s marketing manager Igor Bruzl revealed that representatives of both clubs are already in negotiations. In the past, Svěrkoš played four years in Germany’s Bundesliga. Meanwhile, the national team’s all-time top scorer, Jan Koller (55 goals), signed a one-and-a-half-year contract June 23 with another Russian club, Samara. He moves to Russia from Germany’s Nuremberg.BAROŠ Another national team striker, Milan Baroš, will not continue playing in England’s Premiership next season. Baroš spent the past spring at Portsmouth on loan from France’s Olympique Lyon. Portsmouth coach Harry Redknapp said Baroš will return to France this summer.
