(Updated July 2, 2008) Customs officers burned one ton of fake Viagra and anabolic steroid drugs collected over the past two years from post offices, Mladá fronta Dnes reported on Wednesday. Confiscated drugs came mostly from China, India and Hong Kong, the newspaper reported. Customs officials also found drugs hidden in clothes and footwear imported into the country.
U.S.-based Pfizer, the drug maker which is the legalized producer of Viagra, warns that the company has seen fake pills with 10 times the amount of the active ingredient.
For users with heart problems, the fakes could cause death, according to doctors.
"In the best-case scenario, anyone who uses one of these counterfeits should get ready to feel discomfort, nausea and perhaps even vomiting," warns Stanislav Havlíček, president of the Czech Medical Chamber doctors group.
The European Commission warns too of the influx of counterfeit drugs to the European market; stating that the increase of fake drugs coming to Europe in 2006 was by 384 percent over the preceding year.
