(Updated July 2, 2008) Almost half of Czechs surveyed would find it uncomfortable to have a Romany person as a neighbor, according to a Eurobarometer survey reported in Právo on Wednesday.
Residents also say they don’t make friends with those in the Romany, or Gypsy, community -- only 18 percent of those surveyed said they've made any friendly ties. The results are similar to those in previous surveys in the Czech Republic and across Europe.
Out of the countries where more than half respondents said they wouldn't mind a Roma for a neighbor were Poland at 58 percent and Sweden at 52 percent. Of those surveyed, 48 percent of French people said they wouldn’t mind having a Roma neighbor.
Almost 27,000 Europeans took part in the survey. Every fourth person who took the survey wouldn't want to live next door to a Romany person. The Roma are the biggest minority group in the European Union, according to the European Commission.
