RECORDS Two athletes set world records at the star-studded Golden Cleat track and field competition in Ostrava, north Moravia, June 12. Cuba’s Dayron Robles won the men’s 110-meter hurdles race in 12.87 seconds. Meanwhile, Ethiopia’s Dire Tune cleared 18,517 meters (11.5 miles) in a one-hour women’s race.

ADVANCED The national women’s basketball team beat Japan 76-64 in an Olympic qualifier June 13, securing a spot in the upcoming Beijing Games. At Beijing, the Czechs will take on the United States, Spain, China, Mali and New Zealand. The basketball squad is the only team from the Czech Republic competing in the Olympics.
TRANSFER Italian club Lazio Rome has permanently signed defender David Rozehnal, who had been on loan from Newcastle. The 27-year-old, who joined Newcastle from Paris St Germain in a £2.9 million (89.7 million Kč/$5.7 million) deal last summer, has been with Lazio since January. Newcastle says the deal will fully recover the fee the team paid the French club. Rozehnal made 25 appearances for Newcastle last season.
PUDIL Midfielder Daniel Pudil, who helped Slavia Praha win the Gambrinus liga title this season, will play with Racing Genk in Belgium’s top-flight league next season. The 22-year-old played for Slavia on loan from Slovan Liberec. He missed Euro 2008 due to an injury that he suffered in a pub while celebrating the Gambrinus liga title.
FREE AGENT Czech-American hockey forward Robert Holík is set to become an unrestricted free agent in the NHL for the first time in his career. Holík, who captained the Atlanta Thrashers last season, said the Thrashers’ management had made “absolutely no effort” to sign him. “I’ve got to look forward,” he added. Holík made $4.25 million (66.9 million Kč) last season and ranked third on the team with 15 goals.
VOTE HC Lassenberger Plzeň’s president, Tomáš Král, is the only remaining candidate to become president of the Czech Ice Hockey Association. The other two candidates, Zbyněk Kusý and František Černík, withdrew from the race in mid-May. The Association of Professional Clubs will hold the presidential vote June 21 in Prague.
COACH Soccer coach Michal Bílek, who most recently guided Sparta Praha, will manage Ružomberok in Slovakia’s first division next season. Bílek resigned from his position at Sparta in April after the club failed to defend the league title.
GOLFER Jessica Kordová, 15, became only the second Czech female golfer in history to qualify for the prestigious U.S. Open tournament, to be played in Edina, Minnesota, June 26?29. Kordová, the daughter of 1998 Australian Open tennis champion Petr Korda, secured a spot in the tournament after winning a qualifier in Hobe Sound, Florida.
