New rulesThe good side of the new Schengen rules is that they will discourage all “backpackers.” Most of those people take pretty useless Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) courses and want to start teaching English to have some cash to pay for their partying before moving on to other party towns after a few months.Max BahnsonPragueEU policyThe main purpose of the EU’s Common Agricultural Policy is not to help farmers but to provide a means for the criminals who run the European Union to skim money out of its budget (“Scrap the cap,” Opinion, June 4–10).It works much the same way that the military does in the United States. For this reason, it is unlikely to be reformed.Margot WinstonPrague Radar baseAs a Czech living in the United Kingdom, I fear for the Czech Republic if there is a military confrontation between the United States and Russia (“Radar protest gains ground,” News, June 4–10). The U.S. government is not silly. It knows that not only the radar station in the Czech Republic, but the whole country, will be the first target of any enemies of America. The United States has no qualms if other countries bear the first brunt of any attack on America. It is today the most dangerous country for world peace, with its obsession for pre-emptive — and usually unsubstantiated reasons for — strikes against other nations it regards as an enemy. These U.S. attacks usually said to be for “restoring democracy” are hiding the real reason of trying to secure the access to oil-rich areas of the world. I urge the Czech government not to agree to any U.S. installations on Czech soil. Karel DiblicekSt. Mary in the Marsh,Kent, United KingdomBernard is bestI have had some of the beers you mention in the article about top beer awards (“Czechs no longer brew top pilsner,” Business, June 4–10).My biggest surprise was Bernard, which I tasted the first time in Rumburk, north Bohemia, while visiting there, recently. This beer is far less filling than any of the others I tasted in the Czech Republic. It has a hoppy taste that I like, and overall, I would personally classify it as the best-tasting beer available commercially anywhere.Jiri HubacekVictoria, British Columbia
