Paroubek calls on government to support Lisbon Treaty
Opposition leader also pushes for end to U.S. radar talks
June 11th, 2008 issue
(Updated June 18, 2008) Opposition Social Democrat Party chief Jiří Paroubek has said his party wants Parliament to approve the Lisbon Treaty, even though Ireland voters rejected the European Union document it in a referendum last week, ČTK wrote on Wednesday. The European Union "constitution" has already been approved by 18 member countries. Czech politicians have not yet approved it, however. The Ireland vote has stirred up more controversy about the document, which calls for a common EU president and more common legal rules between countries. Czech Prime Minister Miroslav Topolánek said on Tuesday that when Czechs take the presidency of the European Union in January, government and opposition politiciansn should streamline their attitudes toward foreign policy initiatives. In addition, Paroubek said his party’s continued support of the Cabinet will depend on stopping talks with the United States about positioning an anti-missile radar base in the Brdy mountain range near Prague. He is also calling for Health Minister Tomáš Julínek to scrap an ambitious healthcare plan to privatize state hospitals.
