EURO In its last warm-ups before Euro 2008, the national soccer team scored wins in two friendly games. In the first, the Czechs beat Lithuania, 2-0, May 27 in Prague, and then Scotland, 3-1, May 30. The Czechs are scheduled to kick off Euro 2008 with a game against Switzerland June 7 in Basel.

SCANDAL Organizers of the Lithuania game caused turmoil when they played the Latvian anthem instead of the Lithuanian one. Czech Football Association (ČMFS) spokesman Václav Tichý said the mistake most likely resulted from a bad English translation. While Latvia is “Lotyšsko” in Czech, “Litva” stands for Lithuania. The ČMFS sent an apology to both the Lithuanian Soccer Association and the Lithuanian embassy in Prague.
MISS The Czech Republic has celebrated a first victory related to Euro 2008. Dominika Hužvarová, a 22-year-old Czech student, was named Miss Euro 2008 in a contest of women representing each of the 16 participating countries. Hužvarová earned a check for 5,000 euros ($7,850/125,750 Kč) and will be present during various Euro 2008 ceremonies.
BERGER Soccer midfielder Patrik Berger has moved after 12 years in England’s Premiership to the Gambrinus liga. Against expectations, however, Berger did not rejoin Slavia Praha but instead signed up with its crosstown rival, Sparta. During his English career, Berger played with Liverpool, Portsmouth and most recently with Aston Villa.
TRANSFER In another soccer move, national team midfielder Tomáš Sivok has transferred from Italy’s Udinese to Turkey’s Besiktas Istanbul. Sivok joined Udinese from Sparta Praha last summer but was sent on loan back to Sparta this spring. He has signed a four-year contract with the Turks.
BOLT Visitors to the Golden Spike track and field event in Ostrava, north Moravia, June 12, will have a chance to see the new 100-meter world record holder, Usain Bolt of Jamaica. Bolt, who stunned the world May 31 by clearing 100 meters in 9.72 seconds at a competition in New York City, will compete in the 200-meter sprint at Ostrava.
COACH Hockey coach Alois Hadamczik, who led the national team over the past three years, has agreed to take over HC Vítkovice in the Extraliga. Hadamczik resigned from his position with the national team after the Czechs failed to get past the quarterfinals at the World Championship in early May.
MOVE Meanwhile, national soccer team assistant coach Jaroslav Šilhavý has signed a two-year contract with the Gambrinus liga’s Viktoria Plzeň. Šilhavý will take over the west Bohemian team after the national team’s return from Euro 2008. He is expected to end his work on the national team following the planned retirement of head coach Karel Brückner.
