Journalist hunger strike to support radar base plan

Doležal is 'Czech Hunter S. Thompson' after gonzo writer

May 28th, 2008 issue

(Updated June 4, 2008) Journalist Jiří X. Doležal will go on a hunger strike to support plans to have a U.S radar base in the Czech Republic, Ceskenoviny.cz reported on Wednesday.

The Reflex entertainment magazine writer said he plans not to eat until a treaty is signed with the United States supporting the base. A plan was scrapped for Condoleezza Rice, U.S. Secretary of State, to visit the Czech Republic in early May to sign such a document. Aides said Rice had unexpected scheduling problems.

Doležal is called the “Czech Hunter S. Thompson” after the American gonzo journalist and famed book author. He said he is also protesting against the “populism” of politicians who do not want to have a radar base in the country.

His plan comes as two hunger strikers against the base said Monday they will end their strike. Instead, a “chain” of well-known politicians and celebrities, each of whom is expected to fast for 48 hours, will take up the charge.

The radar base is slated to be built on the Brdy military grounds about 90 miles outside of Prague. It is to be an extension of the European missile-defense shield.

Doležal said he will officially describe his hunger strike plans at a press conference called “The Last Breakfast of Jiří X. Doležal”.
