SLAVIA Thanks in part to the collapse of its rival, the soccer club Slavia Praha won the Gambrinus liga for the first time in 12 years. A draw in the last round against Jablonec May 17 was enough to secure the title.

CUP While it failed to clinch the league title, Sparta did manage to win the country’s version of the FA Cup. Sparta won after a penalty shootout in the championship game against Slovan Liberec May 13. The game ended with a 0-0 tie in regulation.
HOCKEY The national hockey team’s campaign in the World Championship ended in a quarterfinal game against Sweden May 15. Following a 2-2 tie in regulation, the Czechs conceded a sudden-death goal in overtime. It was the second year in a row that the team failed to advance past the quarterfinals. Head coach Alois Hadamczik announced his resignation moments after the team’s defeat in Canada.
REPLACEMENT Hadamczik’s resignation as national team head coach has started the search for a new manager. The hottest candidate appears to be hockey legend Vladimír Růžička. The 44-year-old former NHL player now works as the head coach and general manager at Extraliga champion Slavia Praha. Růžička guided the national team in the past and won a world championship with the team in 2005.
CHAIRMAN The Czech Ice Hockey Association is also looking for a candidate to replace outgoing Chairman Vratislav Kulhánek. One month before voting in late June, there are three applicants for the job, including HC Pardubice General Manager Zbyněk Kusý, HC Vítkovice General Manager František Černík and Plzeň General Manager Tomáš Král.
NEDVĚD Juventus Turin soccer midfielder Pavel Nedvěd will not rejoin the national team for the upcoming Euro 2008 championship, which kicks off June 7. Following the forced absence of playmaker and team captain Tomáš Rosický of Arsenal due to a knee injury, Nedvěd had been expected to announce his comeback for the tournament. However, head coach Karel Brückner said May 15 that the 37-year-old Nedvěd insisted on remaining retired from the national side.
UEFA CUP Zenit St. Petersburg defender Radek Šírl became only the fifth Czech soccer player to win the UEFA Cup. Šírl triumphed with the Russian club at the May 14 final in Manchester, England, where his team beat Scotland’s Glasgow Rangers 2-0. In the past, Radek Látal and Jiří Němec won the cup with German’s Schalke 04 in 1997 and Patrik Berger and Vladimír Šmicer secured the title with England’s Liverpool in 2001.
