Soccer group apologizes after mixing up Latvia, Lithuania

Communications director resigns over incident

May 21st, 2008 issue

(Updated May 29, 2008) At a Czech-Lithuanian soccer match on Tuesday, the Czech Soccer Union confused the Latvian national anthem with that of Lithuania, and hung the Lithuanian national flag upside down, Hospodářské noviny wrote on Thursday.

The group's communications director resigned following the incident. In addition, soccer union officials apologized to the Lithuanian Soccer League and to the Lithuanian Embassy in Prague.

Embassy officials said they had not failed to see the humor in the situation. They wished the Czech Soccer League good luck in coming matches.
