ČUNEK Foreign Affairs Minister Karel Schwarzenberg has hired the world’s largest detective agency, Kroll, to probe the books of Christian Democratic Chairman Jiří Čunek, the daily Hospodářské noviny reported May 19. The experts are expected to say how Čunek earned his millions before becoming a top politician. If the audit fails, Schwarzenberg has vowed to leave the Cabinet.STALKING The Council for Equal Opportunities for Men and Women is expected to recommend a bill that would make stalking a criminal offense, Human Rights and Minorities Minister Džamila Stehlíková told the Czech News Agency (ČTK) May 16. Stalking is already illegal in several EU countries and is most often encountered by victims of domestic violence.RADAR Czech military police who have been monitoring the site of an ongoing Greenpeace protest against the planned U.S. radar base at the Brdy military grounds will take stricter measures against tourists entering the area, spokesman Jan Čermák told ČTK May 19. The protest has been going on for three weeks.RETRIBUTION The Civic Democratic (ODS) leadership is attempting to force party rebels to vote for church property compensation, the news server iDnes.cz reported May 19. Rebel leader Vlastimil Tlustý said that, until he sees the calculations behind the goverment’s determination of a 270 billion Kč amount, he cannot support the bill.VOTING The ruling coalition wants to push changes to the voting procedure through Parliament despite opposition disapproval, Hospodářské noviny reported May19. The planned change should reduce the number of mandates the communists get without affecting smaller parties, according to leaked papers from the Justice Ministry.
