Fresh fish consumption up 60 percent

About 50,000 tons sold yearly

May 21st, 2008 issue

(Updated May 29, 2008) Czechs have embraced fresh fish, now that more of it is available on the market, Hospodářské noviny reported on Thursday.

Sales of fresh fish have increased by 60 percent in recent months. About 50,000 tons of fish are sold in the Czech Republic every year.

Before the country joined the European Union in 2004, it was harder to get fresh fish. Frozen was popular, however.

Now, residents can go to several Prague markets, including specialty shops on Zborovská street in Smíchov or Široká in Old Town.
