Spread of HIV is at all-time high

Officials start campaign to educate public

May 14th, 2008 issue

(Updated May 16, 2008) Statistics show that the spread of HIV in the Czech Republic is reaching all-time highs, Mladá fronta Dnes wrote Friday.

In the first four months of 2008, 59 new cases of HIV infection were discovered – 11 more than in the same period last year. A total of 122 new cases were discovered last year, which is the highest number since testing began.

Health Minister Tomáš Julínek and Human Rights Minister Džamila Stehlíková have started a campaign against the spread of HIV/AIDS.

“What is most alarming is that the HIV-positive group continues to get younger,” Stehlíková said. “Most of the victims are women between 20 and 24 and men between 25 and 29 years of age.”

There are currently 1,090 known HIV-positive people in the country, according to the statistics of the Czech AIDS Assistance Association (Česká společnost AIDS pomoc). Of this number, 247 have developed AIDS. More than three-fourths of this number are men. More than half of the people infected with the disease live in Prague.
