Penalty lowered for man who illegally sold human skin

Skin, bone and retinal tissue profits could not be proved

May 7th, 2008 issue

(Updated May 13, 2008) A regional appeals court in Brno has lowered the penalty for Jiří Adler, the head of the organ bank for Brno Faculty hospitál, who illegally sold human skin to the Dutch Euroskinbank, Aktuálně.cz wrote on Tuesday.

The appeals court lowered Adler's parole sentence from three to one and a half years and the penalty he had to pay from 1.5 million Kč ($93,750) to 600,000 Kč.

The court said the prosecution failed to prove that Adler made over 5 million Kč from skin sales.

Instead of giving the hospital the proceeds, calculated at 7 million Kč from the sales of skin, bone, and retinal tissue, Adler and his five accomplices are accused of sending it to private, non-profit, and corporate accounts.

Adler claims he is innocent and that he donated the skin to the Euroskinbank, which rewarded him for a job well done.
