CHAMPIONS HC Slavia Praha beat Karlovy Vary 4-2 in the all-important final game of the best-of-seven championship series April 16, winning its second Extraliga ice hockey title. Slavia scored two goals within the opening 10 minutes and then held control of the game throughout.

CONTROVERSY Meanwhile, the Extraliga relegation series between Ústí nad Labem and Mladá Boleslav featured some controversial decision-making. Ústí, which played in the Extraliga this season, won the series’ first game but then lost the following four games, forfeiting its Extraliga spot to Mladá Boleslav. Before the fifth game of the series, as if conceding, Ústí’s management sent eight players on holiday due to poor play.
NEDVĚD Juventus Turin midfielder Pavel Nedvěd will likely join the Czech national team in the Euro 2008 tournament, according to the Italian club’s coach, Claudio Ranieri. “I’m certain he’ll return to the national team,” he said. Rumors about the comeback of the 35-year-old playmaker intensified after a muscle injury jeopardized the appearance of the team’s captain, Tomáš Rosický, in the tourney, which kicks off in June.
HOCKEY The national hockey team finished second in the Česká pojišťovna Cup, the last part of the four-event Euro Hockey Tour, held April 17?20 in Liberec, north Bohemia. The Czechs beat Sweden (5-3) and Finland (2-1 on penalties) and lost to Russia (3-2). In the overall Euro Hockey Tour standings, the Czechs took third place.
ROWING One of the world’s best rowing coaches, Dick Tonks of New Zealand, is being lured to take over supervision of the Czech Republic’s rowers after the Summer Olympics. The Czech Rowing Union’s chairman, Jiří Kejval, said that Tonks has been offered an annual salary of $120,000 (1.87 million Kč) and free accommodation in Prague if he agrees to lead the Czech rowers.
SAMPRAS U.S. tennis legend Pete Sampras will once again be seen in action on a court Nov. 29 in Bratislava. The long-time No. 1 player will take on Slovakia’s best player, Dominik Hrbatý, in an exhibition match.
QUALIFIED Whitewater canoeist Štěpánka Hilgertová will likely become the oldest Czech athlete to compete in the Summer Olympics in Beijing this summer. The 40-year-old, who has won three Olympic gold medals, won the national qualifier April 20, securing a spot in Beijing.
SQUASH Martin Koukal extended his reign over the country’s squash courts when he beat Martin Štěpán in straight sets in the Czech championship April 20. Koukal has won 10 consecutive national titles.
