(Updated April 28, 2008) Organizers of the planned music festival "May Day Without Communists" don't have enough money to hold the event, Hospodářské noviny reported on Monday.
In the last two years, the anti-communist festival was held in Letná Park, which had previously been a traditional communist gathering place on Labor Day.
"We used to get money from City Hall, but we didn’t receive any this year. Other donations are not enough," said Filip Štědrý, an organizer.
Organizers estimate their costs for the event to be about 300,000 Kč ($18,600).
This year, the group planned to hold an outdoor concert on Žofín Island. It announced plans to protest against China’s human rights record and express solidarity with the people of Tibet.
Several Czech politicians attended the event in recent years, including Czech Prime Minister Mirek Topolánek who gave a speech in 2007, and Senator Jaromír Štetina, who calls for his colleagues to enforce the law which bans promotion of communism.
