(Updated April 25, 2008) Almost 50 percent of Czechs don’t know that their country is going to take on the presidency role of the European Union from January to July, according to a STEM research survey reported on Thursday in E15 economic newspaper.
About 25 percent of survey respondents agreed that the Czech Republic is ready to assume the presidency role. About 80 percent of respondents said they would prefer if coalition and opposition politicians would try to stop attacking each other during that time period.
During the presidency, Czech politicians are expected to deal with a European energy and climate package currently under discussion and a possible agricultural reform policy. The Lisbon Treaty, a document expected to govern the European Union members, is also expected to be passed in the coming months, meaning Czechs may play a key role in deciding on a permanent president.
In addition, the Czech Republic will host hundreds of diplomats and journalists at European Union meetings.
Just one in seven Czechs feel they have enough info about the preparation process leading up to the EU presidency, and one in five has some idea about what the position means for the country.
