(Updated April 18, 2008) Prime Minister Mirek Topolánek had problems with the bouncers when he tried to get into a trendy nightclub in Cyprus earlier this week, Tyden.cz reported Friday. Guys guarding the door of the Nicosia bar couldn’t believe their ears when they heard they were dealing with the Czech prime minister and refused to let him in, according to a Cyprus newspaper. People traveling with Topolánek managed to call the club owner, who told bouncers to let the group go inside.
A spokesman at the Czech Embassy in Cyprus refused to comment on the bar snafu, saying that what the prime minister does on his own time is a private matter.
Six years ago, French soccer stars Zinedine Zidane and Thierry Henry also had problems getting into a Cyprus club, the online news site reported. One of the bouncer's colleagues recognized them eventually.
Topolánek went to Nicosia Saturday to offer help in unifying the country when Czechs take over the EU presidency in the first half of 2009. He spent three days in the island country.
