Police encourage minorities to join

Teen education program to be launched at police academy

April 16th, 2008 issue

(Updated April 20, 2008) Czech police have started a teen program to attract minorities to their ranks, ČT 24 (Czech Television) reported on Sunday.

About 220 middle school students from 506 schools were selected by the police over the last year for the pilot educational program. Police expect to lower that number to 110 students in a final selection process.

A majority of the applicants have been Roma, or Gypsy students, and Vietnamese students, but one Mongolian student and one Afghan student applied as well.

Police will launch the program at the police academy in Holešov na Kroměřížsku in a few months.

The goal is to improve the understanding and relations between police and the country's minorities, officials said.
