Police arrest soccer fan, confiscate homemade weapons

Heavy security deters Brno, Bohemians club violence

April 16th, 2008 issue

(Updated April 20, 2008) Police arrested one fan and confiscated numerous homemade weapons in a match-up between FC 1 Brno and Prague Bohemians 1905 soccer clubs on Sunday night, Denik reported.

Several buses brought “the hard-core rowdies” from Bratislava and Brno to Prague’s Bohemians stadium for the match, the newspaper reported. Brno and Bratislava fans often attend the same matches and support each other in any ensuing altercations, the paper said.

Police found and confiscated an assortment of homemade hand grenades, baseball bats, shovel handles, table legs with nails stuck in them, steel pipes and brass knuckles from the buses.

One person was arrested for carrying a hand-held smoke grenade.

After the match, police supervised the Brno fans as they got back on their buses to go home.

Both soccer clubs have been working with the Prague police to prepare for the match since last week. Interior Minister Ivan Langer announced a month ago that soccer clubs need to take responsibility for their own security at games.

Bohemians 1905 hired 300 security personnel to keep peace at the match, said Lukáš Přibyl, the club’s director.

FC 1 Brno did not organize any buses to Prague, said Roman Pros, director of the Brno soccer club.
