(Updated April 23, 2008) The deputy mayor of the Moravian town of Hulvaky, Jiří Jezerský, is to go on trial for making racist remarks against Roma, or Gypsy people, Hospodářské noviny wrote on Wednesday.
Jezerský, is an associate of Senator Liana Janáčková, who is also under investigation for racist remarks.
In the summer of 2006, Janáčková was caught on video saying that "Gypsies were overbreeding" and that they should be "removed with dynamite."
Jezerský replied to her, “Give me a gun and permission, and I'll do it myself.”
Both Janáčková and Jezerský are accused of the crime of insulting a nation, ethnic group, race or conviction. They each face up to two years in prison, if convicted, according to David Bartoš, a spokesman for the Ostrava state’s attorney office.
Jezerský, who still holds office in the Mariánske Horky and Hulváky district, refused to comment on the lawsuit.
This is the first time in 11 years that the police have tried to prosecute a legislator for racist remarks.
