Crowning gloryJewels unveiled to the public for first time in five yearsApril 16th, 2008 issue
(Updated April 17, 2008) Don't miss this rare chance to see the country's most precious treasures in an 11-day display in Vladislav Hall at Prague Castle. The shiny "crown jewels" exhibition opens at 9 a.m. on Saturday. Get there early to avoid the crowds. Security is expected to be tight, so officials are asking that visitors leave bottles and large bags at home. The display includes the Saint Wenceslas Crown made for King Charles IV in 1347. Also awe-inspiring are the royal scepter and a royal apple made of gold and decorated with gem stones. There's also a coronation crucifix from the 14th century, a coronation cloak and other ornamental accessories, including a belt, an ornamental band, a stole and an ermine collar. President Václav Klaus displayed the jewels in 2003 after he was elected president the first time. He was recently re-elected by the Parliament in a contentious voting process. The jewels are kept at St. Vitus Cathedral in a locked chamber and are rarely displayed. The display will be open daily, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m from April 19 to April 29. To get there, take the Old Castle Steps near Malostranská metro stop to Vladislav hall in the Old Royal Palace at Prague Castle. Other articles in News (16/04/2008):
