HOCKEY The hockey clubs Slavia Praha and HC Karlovy Vary split the first two games of the best-of-seven Extraliga finals played in Prague’s O2 Arena. The west Bohemian club won the first game 5-4 April 4, but Slavia struck back one day later, winning 5-2. The next two games were scheduled to take place in Karlovy Vary April 8 and 9.

BERDYCH The top Czech tennis player, Tomáš Berdych, advanced to the semifinals of one of the world’s biggest tournaments, the ATP Masters in Miami. Berdych then lost to Spain’s Rafael Nadal in straight sets April 4, with Russia’s Nikolay Davydenko eventually winning the tournament. Both Berdych and Davydenko are set to clash in the upcoming Davis Cup quarterfinal match between the Czech Republic and Russia to be played April 11?13 in Moscow.
HOOLIGANS The Czech Football Association’s management has been lobbying in Parliament to prevent a new law from removing police from stadiums. In February, Interior Minister Ivan Langer introduced a plan that would see soccer clubs pay for private security stewards or for a police presence at stadiums. Following a major disturbance during the Sparta-Slavia Gambrinus liga game March 31, during which damage worth 500,000 Kč ($31,114) was done to Strahov Stadium, soccer officials have intensified their lobbying.
TROPHY Forty-three-year- old hockey goalie Dominik Hašek won his third career William M. Jennings Trophy, an annual award given to the goalkeepers of the NHL team with the fewest goals against average. This season, Hašek shares the trophy with his Detroit Red Wings’ teammate Chris Osgood. In the past, Hašek shared the trophy with Buffalo’s Grant Fuhr in 1994 and then won it on his own with the Buffalo Sabres in 2001.
CURLING The men’s national curling team got off to a sensational start at the World Championship in Grand Forks, North Dakota, U.S.A. In their inaugural appearance in the championship, the Czechs upset powerhouse Scotland, 7-5, April 5 and then beat the heavily favored U.S. team, 7-6, April 7.
PENALTY Soccer midfielder David Jarolím received a four-game ban and was fined 10,000 euros ($15,500/249,800 Kč) by the German soccer association (DFB) for a scandalous foul he committed March 29 in a game between Hamburg and Bielefeld in Germany’s Bundesliga. During a timeout, Jarolím, playing for Hamburg, hit an opponent in the groin.
DOUBTFUL It is unlikely that Tomáš Rosický, captain of the national soccer team, will play in the Euro 2008 tournament, AFP reported April 7. Recurring knee tendonitis has sidelined the 27-year-old Arsenal midfielder since January. It is also unlikely he will play in the Premier League again this season, the national team’s doctor added.
