UPSET In a shocking upset, the reigning Czech hockey champion, Sparta Praha, failed to advance out of the Extraliga’s first playoff round. Sparta lost four straight games in its best-of-seven series against Liberec.CHAMPION Speedskater Martina Sáblíková defended her title in the women’s 5-kilometer race at the World Championships in Nagano, Japan, March 8. Two days before, in a 3-kilometer race, Sáblíková finished fourth. BOXING Rudolf Kraj is set to join Lukáš Konečný as another Czech boxer fighting for a World Championship belt. While Konečný will take on Ukraine’s Sergei Dzinziruk for the WBO’s super welterweight belt, Kraj qualified to fight for the WBC’s light heavyweight belt after defeating the U.S.’s Matt Godfrey 3-0 March 8 in Krefeld, Germany. BASKETBALL Women’s basketball champion Gambrinus Sika Brno has qualified for the Final Four tournament of Europe’s best club teams. The Brno players secured a spot in the tournament by defeating Valencia 75-69 March 5 in Spain. The Final Four tourney, in which Brno will face France’s Bourges in the semifinals, will take place April 11–13 in Brno.OWNERS The Gambrinus liga’s current leader, Slavia Praha, announced March 5 that the soccer club is owned by its executive directors, Petr Doležal and Tomáš Rosen. Slavia confirmed that the two managers took over a majority stake in Slavia almost two years ago, in May 2006, from Slavia’s previous owner, the English National Investment Company.PROGNOSIS The national soccer team is likely to win Euro 2008 championship in Austria and Switzerland this summer, according to a prognosis issued by financial analysts at the Swiss bank UBS. The bankers based their prediction on the market value of players and teams’ results in previous European championships. Two years ago, UBS successfully predicted that Italy would win the World Cup.
