(Updated March 7, 2008) President Václav Klaus signed on for another five-year term in office on Friday saying he expects the political atmosphere to calm down after a few tense weeks.
Klaus narrowly defeated challenger Czech-American economist Jan Švejnar on Feb. 15 after three rounds of voting by Parliament. The vote was Parliament's second try to elect a president. The first one on Feb. 8 was filled with heated disputes between politicians and ended without a clear winner.“I think that the adrenaline level is increased in every dramatic moment and the elections are a classic example of this,” Klaus told journalists, following a swearing-in ceremony at Prague Castle. “I think there will now be a certain calming down.”At the inauguration, Klaus honored Tomáš Masaryk, Czechoslovakia’s first president. Former president Václav Havel and his wife Dagmar attended the ceremony.
