TOTTENHAM The last Czech team in the UEFA Cup, Slavia Praha, was eliminated in the cup’s fourth round by Tottenham Hotspur of England’s Premiership. Following a 2-1 defeat in the home leg, Slavia tied with its English opponent 1–1 in a match in London Feb. 21.

BERGER Soccer midfielder Patrik Berger has said he will likely return to Slavia Praha this summer. The 34-year-old midfielder left Slavia in 1995 for Germany’s Borussia Dortmund. Since then, he has played in England with Liverpool FC, Portsmouth and most recently with Aston Villa.
TENNIS Radek Štěpánek’s attempt to win his third title on the ATP Tour was halted by American Andy Roddick in the final of an ATP tournament in San José, California. Roddick won the Feb. 24 final 6-4, 7-5.
SKI-CROSS Skier Tomáš Kraus continued his domination of the ski-cross World Cup this year, winning a Feb. 22 race in Sierra Nevada, Spain. The win was his fourth victory in five World Cup races this season.
CROSS-COUNTRY Another dominant Czech skier, cross-country specialist Lukáš Bauer, boosted his lead in the World Cup by winning a race in Falun, Sweden, Feb. 24. Bauer said that winning the World Cup is a priority for him this season.
BOXER Lukáš Konečný notched his 18th win by knockout in the professional ring, defeating Kimfuta Makussu in the second round of a bout in Halle, Germany, Feb 23. The fight was Konečný’s tune-up before his expected match against Ukraine’s Sergei Dzinziruk for the WBO super welterweight belt. The championship bout has been postponed twice due to injuries.
POLICE A new draft of the law on policing in the Czech Republic, passed by the Cabinet Feb. 25, will do away with police patrols at soccer stadiums. As a result, soccer clubs will in the future be fully responsible for the happenings or hooliganism inside their stadiums.
DRAW The Czech Football Association (ČMFS) received about 200,000 requests for tickets to the national team’s games in the Euro 2007 championship in Austria and Switzerland. The ČMFS will be able to distribute only some 20,000 tickets. The ticket winners will be determined by computer draw March 3.
JÁGR Hockey star Jaromír Jágr said he will not play on the national team at this year’s World Championship in Canada. The 36-year-old captain of the New York Rangers said he was not considering joining the team, even though the championship will be staged for the first time in North America. Jágr said he preferred to relax instead.
