Shared Schengen

Schengen is not a Czech peculiarity (“Inside story,” News, Feb. 20–26).The Czech government is not paid by taxpayers to babysit people who are confused and/or foreigners.
Americans got used to being treated like the Übermenschen (super humans) of Europe. I am happy this period of double standards is finally over.

Direct vote
One of the most reasonable arguments against the direct vote by the people is the cost (“Presidential vote should be an open process,” Opinion, Feb. 13–19). It is estimated that the direct cost of the presidential election would be 700 million Kč ($41 million). The three days at the castle in which Václav Klaus was re-elected president cost only 300,000 Kč.
Now, if Czech Republic had a presidential political system, the 700 million Kč would be a cost nobody could question. However, since the Czech Republic is a parliamentary democracy, it would be a very questionable cost to spend that kind of money on a president who has only a very limited role.
Rather then rethinking the Constitution, I would suggest Czech voters remind themselves that when they are voting for their member of Parliament, they are also voting for their president.

Kosovo apology
I cannot believe my country was so fast to recognize Kosovo independence. That land will just turn out to be another Muslim nation that turns against U.S. interests.
After what the Clinton administration did to Belgrade with the bombing, one would think the United States would be more sensitive to support an Orthodox/Christian nation instead of an Islamic nation.
I guess U.S. President George W. Bush is getting bad advice from our lousy State Department. I thought Bush met Putin years ago and saw into his soul.
If he did have that miraculous vision, he would know that Kosovo independence will not improve our relations with Russia.
For what it is worth, this individual apologizes to the people of Belgrade and Serbia. Please stay calm, and I hope things remain peaceful.

Fosil eaters
I have to say I am glad that Fosil exists. In fact, before Fosil’s existence, the only Mexican food that I could find was at home, which I cooked myself.
Nowadays, when the Mexican Embassy offers an event, it hires Fosil’s catering services. As a Mexican, I believe Fosil’s food is the closest taste to our cuisine.
It’s true that it is not the biggest place or as luxurious as many of the restaurants you have visited, but for us (Mexicans) it doesn’t matter.
