The match game

A quick guide to finding the perfect partner

By Jacy Meyer

February 13th, 2008 issue

It’s Valentine’s Day, and you’re all ready to show your darling how much you care by showering her (or him) with flowers, jewelry and an expensive meal. But how do you know that you’re really compatible? Great minds have been at work on this vexing question for ages, and produced some helpful guides. This year, look to the animal world, the stars or the Far East to gain a unique perspective on your relationship and where it may (or may not) be going. And, if you want to keep it going, we’ve included suggestions for appropriate dates.

BEASTLY BEHAVIOR

Are you and your honey a wild pair?

This chart, compiled by Zoo and Aquarium Visitor magazine CEO Rudy Socha, will help you decide. If you’ve been together six years, it’s the year of the deer, when controlling the buck becomes important. Thirteen years will see you parroting each other in conversation. Make it to 24 years, and, like the skunk, you’ll have survived even the stinky stuff. Get up close and personal with your animal partner on a visit to the Prague Zoo or Mořský Svět, the city’s aquarium.

Animal symbolism for anniversary years

ANIMAL ATTRACTION

It’s the very unromantic Year of the Rat, according to the Chinese Zodiac. If you were born in the years 1924, 1936, 1948, 1960, 1972, 1984 or 1996, you are hard-working and industrious, and compatible with those born in the years of the ox, monkey or dragon. Are you a tiger? You are a contradiction, as tigers are known to be patient but short-tempered, fearsome but affectionate. You’ll do best with a horse, dragon or dog as your mate. Those born in the Year of the Snake are usually very composed on the surface, but their emotions run deep. Stick with oxen and roosters for a positive match. A good place to digest all this is China Fusion, a tasty Chinese restaurant in the city center. May your fortune cookie be filled with loving advice.

“What’s your sign?” has long been a bad pick-up line, but astrology has its uses in finding and keeping the right partner. “The moment we feel an attraction, planetary chemistry is at work,” according to Nonie Valentine, a local psychotherapist who uses astrology in her work. The chart above shows ideal astrological pairings. According to Valentine, astrological traits are also self-revealing: “More about the hidden bits of ourselves, so we can navigate the deeper waters we find ourselves in when love beckons.” Put the stars in your loved one’s eyes by charting your future during a visit to the Prague Planetarium.
