TENNIS The Czech men’s tennis team beat Belgium 3-2 in a first round Davis Cup match in Ostrava Feb. 8-10. Leading Czech players Tomáš Berdych and Radek Štěpánek secured an insurmountable 3-0 lead after the opening three matches. Substitute players Lukáš Dlouhý and Pavel Vízner then lost the last two singles matches. The team travels to Russia next, for the cup’s quarterfinals April 11–13.

NEDVĚD Japanese soccer club FC Tokyo has announced it will attempt to bring veteran midfielder Pavel Nedvěd from Italy to Japan next summer. Nikkan Sports reported that FC Tokyo was ready to offer Nedvěd’s Italian employer, Juventus, $10 million (175 million Kč) for the 35-year-old player.
TRANSFER National soccer team defender Tomáš Ujfaluši could become another Czech player to leave Italy’s Serie A league. The Fiorentina defender has reportedly signed a preliminary three-year contract with Atletico Madrid and could move to Spain in the summer.
WON Cross-country skier Lukáš Bauer boosted his lead in the World Cup’s overall standings after winning a race in Otepaa, Estonia, Feb. 9. Bauer leads the World Cup by 295 points, ahead of German runner-up Jens Sommerfeldt.
HOCKEY In a poor showing, the national ice hockey team finished last in a Euro Hockey Tour event that ended in Sweden Feb. 10. The team lost to Finland (1-6) and Sweden (2-4), but did beat Russia (4-2).
SOCCER The national soccer team suffered an unexpected 2-0 defeat to Poland in a friendly game Feb. 6 in Nicosia, Cyprus. The two teams will meet again in the 2010 World Cup qualification round that starts next fall.
DRAW The women’s national tennis team will challenge Israel in the Fed Cup playoffs this April. The winner of the match, played in Israel, will qualify for the Fed Cup’s 16-member elite group next year.
GOALIE Soccer goalkeeper Pavel Srníček, who retired last summer from England’s Newcastle, announced that he will run goalkeeping training courses for the Baník Ostrava organization. Apart from Newcastle, Srníček also played in Italy and was for a time the national team’s top goalie.
ATTACKS Two soccer referees from the Gambrinus liga have been attacked over the past year. Police announced earlier this month that an unknown gang attacked Jaroslav Jára in Plzeň, west Bohemia, last year. Then Pavel Královec was beaten in Domažlice, west Bohemia, last month. Both referees had made controversial calls in the Gambrinus liga last season.
