Commuter trains

Look how many people commute for work in New York or London by train every day. (“Consider alternatives to building more roads,” Postview, Jan. 9–15)
Our society is slowly but surely getting used to the fact that commuting to work is inevitable. However, so far the preferred way is to “hit the road” or use the bus. If there is a fast enough, convenient enough and cost-effective alternative to roads, e.g. trains, for our commuters, people will switch.
In addition, the fact that car ownership has doubled since the 1980s but the modernization of our road network hasn’t followed simply can’t be ignored. Both programs need to continue.

Geography lesson
We’re just like the United States and Canada (“The widening divide,” News, Jan. 9–15). Those Americans who have heard of Canada don’t think of it as “really a foreign country,” and have difficulty finding it on a map. Very few Americans have any idea what Canada’s capital is.
Canadians, on the other hand, know everything about America and do their best to make the distinction as clear as possible.

Spiritual choices
I think what the Springers and others are doing in Prague and beyond, is the hope for Europe (“Spiritual groups gain in popularity,” News, Jan. 16–22).
I love to see people with a mindset to make a difference, look beyond the fleeting value of materialism and grow in a spiritual community while serving the local community.
I applaud that they are bringing hope to a searching culture.

Critic kudos
Is there anyone better working in film criticism today than the Post’s Steffen Silvis? I don’t think so. His columns are a “must-read” and a “first-read,” each week.

Smoking impact
The economic impact of paying for the health problems of smokers should be introduced into the equation while the country is trying to reform its spending on social costs (“Smoking bans a smoldering issue,” Business, Jan. 23–29).
Apart from that, there is a clear need to follow the lead given by the rest of Europe and the success of the policy in countries where it has already been adopted.
