NEWSCAST Prima TV will launch a revamped evening newscast Feb. 4 that will compete with TV Nova’s dominant news program in the same time slot, Lidové noviny reported Jan. 22. Prima faces an uphill battle against Nova, which attracts 2.6 million viewers each night for its 7:30 p.m. newscast. Prima attracts 950,000 viewers for its current broadcast.
BONUSES Perhaps a sign of thriving competition, mobile phone operators have been offering their clients increasingly larger bonuses to keep them from switching companies, Hospodářské noviny reported Jan. 22. Operators may offer thousands of free minutes in their efforts to prevent clients from going to other providers.
RESEARCH The state-owned investment agency CzechInvest lured in commitments for 28 new technology centers focused on science and research last year, up from 13 such projects in 2006, the Czech News Agency reported Jan. 21. In total, the agency attracted 182 investments worth 71 billion Kč last year. For the first time Czechs were the most active investors, with 55 projects, compared with Germany, which made 27 investments.
ROBOT Prague’s Na Homolce Hospital has successfully conducted the country’s first-ever robot-assisted surgery on a patient with stomach cancer, using the da Vinci system, the hospital announced Jan. 17. The 53-year-old patient was walking on his own the day after surgery. Na Homolce’s robot surgical unit has conducted 350 operations since October 2005.
TENDER The Finance Ministry has suspended its tender for the state’s integrated budgetary system pending a ruling from the Anti-Monopoly Office (ÚOHS), Ekonom reported Jan. 17. The Czech IT firm Gordic has complained that the tender unfairly favors software designed by Germany’s SAP. The budgetary system is the most important part of the government’s push for an electronic state treasury.
DATA Serial entrepreneur Roman Staněk is in the process of setting up his third technology startup, called Good Data, Mladá fronta Dnes reported Jan. 14. Staněk’s previous companies, NetBeans and Systinet, were acquired by the major U.S. technology companies Sun Microsystems and Hewlett-Packard. Good Data will focus on rethinking business intelligence, Staněk said.
