Royal sovereigntyWhat kind of nitwits want to return to the days of kings, lords and serfs (“Party seeks to restore monarchy,” News, Dec. 19–26)? Only one gets to be king, a few more get to be lords and ladies, while most get to be serfs held in bondage subject to the whim of their masters. Oh, the good old days! Let’s turn back the clock to those days when everyone had it so good.I am happy I was born a sovereign citizen of a democratic republic, which rejected the idea of kingship centuries ago. Just try to set yourself up as king around here. You’ll get what every king in all of history deserved. Not for nothing is every American armed.Phillip David HaskettHoustonPowerful friendsHistory should give the Czech people a clue as to which way to go (“Officials to start radar negotiations,” News, Sept. 5–12). Who in the past has been on the side of the Czechs and Slovaks? Was it the Soviet Union, the one that brutally took over your country has (especially since 1968) stripped the lumber from your forests, brought your economy to a Third World level, and robbed you of your entrepreneurship? Or how about your neighbor Germany, who invaded you, murdered whole villages and prepared the stage for a Soviet takeover? Or perhaps the European leaders who thought that it would be “interesting to see an industrialized nation become “socialist” at the end of World War II? It was the United States’ leadership and the American soldier who liberated Europe from the Nazis. The current original members of the European Union’s politics stopped the U.S. Army from liberating the Czech and Slovak lands. If it were not for the United States of America leading the way to create the state of Czechoslovakia, the Czech and Slovak heritage might not have survived. Now your country has a chance to partner with a just, moral, liberty and freedom living, most powerful country in the history. Can you think of a better choice? Being partners with the United States in a defense system is a move to security, prosperity and a bright future.Vladimir Val CymbalTarzana, California, U.S.A.Waking bearThe Russian bear is clearly out of hibernation (“Experts watch Russian elections,” News, Dec. 12–20) and I expect we will hear a lot more about Russia in the coming years. The country has all the natural resources to be able to hold EU hostage and to be able to influence the policies coming from Brussels.Karel VranyOrlando
