JUNIORS The junior hockey team performed poorly in the World Under-20 Championship that ended in Pardubice, east Bohemia, Jan. 6. The Czechs won three of their six games and finished fifth in the overall standings. Team Canada won the championship after beating Sweden 3-2 in overtime.

TRANSFER The young soccer striker Martin Fenin, who was the star of the Czech junior team that won silver medals in the World Under-20 Championship in Canada last summer, has transferred from Teplice to the German Bundesliga’s Eintracht Frankfurt. The German team agreed to pay 120 million Kč ($6.7 million) for the striker. Fenin becomes the second player from the junior team to be involved in a high-value transfer to the Bundesliga. Last fall, defender Jan Šimůnek transferred from Sparta Praha to Wolfsburg for 140 million Kč.
PREMIER Reading, of England’s Premier League, is set to sign national team midfielder Marek Matějovský to a three and a half year deal, the BBC reported Jan. 8. The 26-year-old, currently playing for Mladá Boleslav, is considered one of the best players in the Gambrinus liga. Boleslav will reportedly receive 49.8 million Kč for Matějovský.
BARGAINING In other soccer transfer news, Jan Koller, a striker on the national team, left French Monaco for the Bundesliga’s Nuremberg. The French club reportedly requested 2 million euros ($2.96 million/52.5 million Kč) for Koller but the Germans were willing to pay just 1 million. Both clubs did not reveal details of the deal. Koller was receiving rare playing opportunities in Monaco and was expected to leave the club.
OPEN AIR Czech hockey defender Jaroslav Špaček captained the Buffalo Sabres at the highest-attended game in NHL history Jan. 1, playing in front of 71,217 fans in an outdoor arena in Buffalo, New York. It was only the second NHL game in modern history played in open air. Buffalo lost to the Pittsburgh Penguins 2-1 in a penalty shootout.
TENNIS The tennis team of Tomáš Berdych and Lucie Šafářová failed to repeat their appearance last year in the final of the Hopman Cup in Perth. The Czechs lost to Australia and the United States while beating India in the group phase of the tournament. The team had to retire from their match against the Americans Dec. 31 due to Berdych’s sickness.
BIRTH Gianluigi Buffon, the soccer goalie who led Italy to triumph in the 2006 World Cup, became the father of a baby boy. Buffon’s Czech partner, top model Alena Šeredová, gave birth Dec. 28 to their son Louis Thomas.
