All around us natural disasters and human tragedies are happening. We can either be blind to it or take part in trying to help people who are suffering.
There is an organization in Prague which really wants to make things better for the Czech Republic. The International Women’s Association of Prague (IWAP) is an independent non-political non-profit organization that unifies women from all over the world. The purpose of the association is to promote friendship among English-speaking women living in the Czech Republic enjoy life “in the heart of Europe” as well as to do something beneficial for others.
Since its inception in 1992 the International Women's Association of Prague has been supporting many Czech charities. Suzanne Formanek IWAP’s Charity Coordinator explains the reason why they are participating in raising funds for Czech charities and organizing various activities linked with it: “We want to give back something from what we experience here in Prague.” IWAP which can be proud of having almost 400 members from 40 different nations engages in planning and hosting fundraising events giving time to people in need and assisting with various efforts such as helping disabled children enjoy a day of horseback riding. All the ladies are volunteers; they give their time and talent to aid other people for free. There are no doubts that the effort of IWAP has been very successful as the association has donated money to over 200 Czech charities and raised in excess of 15 million Czech crowns since its founding.
But IWAP’s members don’t busy themselves only with charity. Although many of the organized activities are charitable the women can also realize their potencial in purely free time activities or programes that mix both occupations together. Some women lead varied clubs for themselves including a Beadwork Group a Cooking Group or clubs focusing on conversation in foreign languages to amuse themselves during their leisure time and to become better friends with each other. As a member you can likewise attend numerous cultural events which are held regularly. And every month the association publishes The Bridge an English-language magazine which informs members about upcoming events reports on past ones and should entertain readers.
On October 13th IWAP held a fundraising event called “A Tribute to the Godfather” and the aim of this event was to raise money for the Rosa Foundation which is an organization providing women and children who are victims of domestic violence with short term emergency housing professional counseling and support. “As a women’s organization we feel particularly sensitive to this issue ” says Formanek . Throughout that evening all the guests enjoyed the best of Italian food and music and a live auction was held. One of the main attractions was a large Persian carpet and a statue donated by the Czech sculptor Olbram Zoubek. Thanks to the auction 400 000 Kč was raised for the Rosa Foundation.
IWAP isn’t indifferent to catastrophes and misfortune. And if you feel the same don't hesistate to join this organization. All women living in the Czech Republic are welcome!
